Arsene Wenger will refuse to pay the extra £3million that Bayern Munich are demanding for defensive midfielder Luis Gustavo.

Arsenal had apparently lodged a £14million bid for the Brazilian international midfielder earlier on in the week, but Bayern are reportedly holding firm on their £17million valuation.

Less ‘buy’ and more ‘bye’…

Gustavo could be the Gunners’ last hope of a competitive addition to the squad this summer after countless targets have gone amiss. Rooney, Bernard, and now Luis Suarez ignored interest from the North London side.

However interest from Atletico Madrid, Wolfsburg and Napoli – who have already stolen Gonzalo Higuain from the Gunners’ grasp – could spell the end of Arsenal’s interest. Dinamo Moscow are also in the race to sign Gustavo, with the Russian club willing to pay the full asking price.

Moscow’s lack of European football could work against them, with the other clubs all boasting Champions League qualification.

The 26-year-old Brazilian had publicly praised England and Arsenal in particular, claiming the club had “great tradition”.

Gustavo – despite turning professional in Brazil – has made his name while playing in Germany, meaning he does not have the fanbase he needs in his homeland. This means he faces huge competition for international places from better known stars such as Fernandinho , Paulinho and Sandro.

He admitted during his public admiration of Arsenal that he would need to be playing regular first team football should he move away from Bayern, who have brought in Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara to boost their midfield, if he is to make the Brazilian World cup 2014 squad.

Despite his 10 international caps – including the Confederations Cup final of 2013 – Gustavo is not a certainty for his country’s home World Cup squad.

Healthy competition

With Abou Diaby struggling with fitness, Mikel Arteta remains the Gunners’ sole defensive midfield option to provide cover for creative midfield stars Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla. Gustavo would face competition from the Spaniard Arteta but the former Everton man would be able to move forward to accommodate the Bayern man.

Yet Wenger’s famed frugality could yet again see the deal fall through. After £8million in funds were raised from the sale of flop Gervinho to Roma, the necessary £3million on top of the initial £14million seems like a small price to pay.

Especially when there looks to be not many other options on the market.

Gustavo should feature for Brazil against Switzerland tonight.

The end to arsenals misery is no other person than AW. He's the most greedy man I have ever known. We have missed out of classic players which would have boosted the strenghth of the team because of a couple of pounds. AW is more of a scout and less of a coach. God help us...

Regardless of the balance sheet or what AW believes is a player's worth. In today's transfer market unfortunately the club who are selling are in complete control with the players valuation. We may not want to pay over the top for a player but for the sake a couple of million pounds we have missed out on Higuain. To be frank a couple of million pounds in the transfer market is nothing, so I urge AW and the board to match the valuation of Gustavo, to add some fresh blood and experience to our team.

Wenger has to go - end of !
A club and a manager with no ambition. Fooling the fans for years while they make millions.
The "Arsene Knows" brigade have a lot to answer for.

has anything been confirmed. Alot of speculation but no word has come from both camps. We don't even know if Arsenal are in for him just a comment he would like to go there. In Arsenals case nothing is ever confirmed until it is posted on the official website or Wenger says so. So I would urge all the gunners panicking to wait patiently and not throw around comments which in hindsight will seem stupid!!

Arsenal is doomed. Don't know if am gonna stay with them much longer.

gustavo is worth upto 19mil ,(price spurs paid for paulinho).
+3 #10 George Smith 2013-08-14 14:10
I tell you what. Wenger has no intention of paying more than 15 million for any player. He will carry on his project y which has not reaped dividends.
If Arsenal fail to challenge ,believe me he will pay the price for his obstinacy.
It's time he realise the game has moved on.
Once upon a time gate receipts count for 90% of income. Now sponsorships can bring in at least 30 to 40% .Mu have been ranked among the world's top two/three richest clubs thanks to their phenomenal success. Now if Arsenal had been half as successful, just imagine the world wide support.
If you want to get more fans to support Arsenal, only a winning team will do not a team which engages in sexy soccer getting nowhere as far as results are concerned.

LOOKING FORWARD TO ADRIAN DURHAM'S DAILY ARSENAL...HEHEHEHE!! !!

You people stop with these baseless rumours. A bid was placed by Arsenal. So far there's been no official confirmation from Bayern that it was rejected. If Bayern wanted to create a bidding war; they would have gladly made public this fact. Instead what every Arsenal fan should be waiting for is Gustavo's statement tomorrow Thursday. I do believe strongly that Bayern accepted the Arsenal bid and have left to Gustavo to decide where to go! It is Gustavo we should be waiting to hear from tomorrow. By the way Talksport are quoting Bandini an Italian journalist as saying that Gustavo is set on joining Arsenal. He is not going to Italy.

@Raider
any evidence we went for anyone apart from Sanogo?
+7 #6 Billy 2013-08-14 13:07
Arsene's turning into the laughing stock of the transfer window once again. If this season is another 4th place finish, I don't know if I can stick by wenger's side anymore.

Quoting Steve of Chiang Mai:
Especially when you throw in the 15M from Alex Song who wasn't replaced!

Yes quite right. So he doesn't value Gustavo at worth £2m more than Song
-2 #4 Raider 2013-08-14 13:00
Firstly who said we missed out on these players, only gossip mongers with no evidence we actually went in for them.
The only player we went in for was Higuain who we was outbid on by Napoli.
Liverpool refuse to sell Suarez and this is all we know. so no eveidence just rumours as per usual!

These crazy rumours only harm the club and sheep like supporters actually believe the hype and crap like Adrian Durham spouts out!

If the bid is placed then we have gone for PLAYER! and only then, everything else is just enquiries like every club makes.
+5 #3 peltonboy 2013-08-14 12:59
Yet another case of Wegner being penny wise pound foolish. I have lost count of the good players we have missed out on for the sake of a relatively small amount of money, while he has been forced to spend the summer getting rid of all the useless bargains he has bought. Always remember...you get what you pay for
+7 #2 Niall 2013-08-14 12:37
This is becoming a joke now! Gustavo is a very worthwhile signing and here we are again penny pinching. Looks like another disappointing window for the Arsenal fans.
