Despite Liverpool’s immediate refusal of a £30m Arsenal bid for Luis Suarez this week, The Mirror report there is still belief around the club that the Uruguayan can be pinched from Liverpool’s clutches.
The Gunners seem keen to use their new financial power in order to sign a proven Premier League striker, with the controversial pair of Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney targeted, as well as Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain.
Would such a controversial player be welcome?
Suarez is thought to be the main target, shown by Arsenal’s willingness to bid a record-doubling £30m for the player. This news splits opinion among Arsenal fans, with some seeing the player for his fantastic footballing talent, whereas others see him as a diving, Branislav Ivanovic-biting, racist.
Arsenal have always prided themselves on being a classy club, with players who stay out of the newspapers for negative reasons, and play the game with great sportsmanship. Some argue that the players have become too soft, and that someone like Suarez would provide a tough, win at all costs mentality that would help Arsenal to end their trophy drought.
Brendan Rodgers vs Arsene Wenger
A comparison of Liverpool and Arsenal’s managers may also provide an insight into how well Suarez would be controlled. Brendan Rodgers, a relative unknown compared to Arsene Wenger, perhaps doesn’t have the authority or strength to control the rebellious player.
Arsene Wenger, or Le Professeur as he is known, has the qualities to set Suarez straight and focus him on maintaining his world-class form that last season carried a mediocre Liverpool team to 7th place in the Premier League, with 23 goals in 33 appearances.
Liverpool not letting him go easily
Despite Suarez’s desire to leave England, Liverpool remain insistent that he stay at the club. A £30m offer for a player who wants to leave and is banned from a handful of games at the start of the next league season is not something that should be immediately ‘rebuffed’.
The situation may require Suarez to submit a transfer request to force an exit from Liverpool. Only then may Arsenal strike, as the Gunners are highly unlikely to increase their bid to Liverpool’s apparent £50m estimation of the player.
Suarez has expressed a desire to leave England after feeling targeted by the English media, with Real Madrid, Napoli and Bayern Munich considered the other interested parties along with Arsenal and Chelsea.
Weighing up the options, Suarez is not worth it
When you consider Suarez’s controversial character, his enormous price tag, his rocky relationship with the English media, and that his signing would upset many proud Arsenal fans, making him Arsenal’s new record signing is just not worth it.
Especially when there is Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain, who is intent on leaving and has expressed desire to move to Arsenal. He is a year younger than Suarez at only 25, would only cost around £25m, is not a known racist, diver or biter of opposition players, and is statistically the most clinical striker in Europe’s top four leagues.
The best outcome for Arsenal would be to sign Higuain, with Real Madrid replacing him with Suarez, significantly weakening one of Arsenal’s league rivals in the process, while keeping the majority of Arsenal fans happy with a cheaper world-class striker who doesn’t come with so much baggage.
