After an evening of frenzied speculation around Arsenal’s new-found wealth and intent in the transfer market, the BBC - or more precisely their Arsenal correspondent David Ornstein, reported that Arsenal were denying activating Marouane Fellaini’s release clause, and weren’t interested in Julio Cesar or Wayne Rooney.

Stevan Jovetic was described as ‘on the radar’, but not a major target.

So, not exactly what fans wanted to hear. But could there be an ulterior motive to this news?

There have been big rumblings coming out of Arsenal today, some on the pitch and some off. Most notably, Ivan Gazidis has made it clear he expects Arsene Wenger to renew his contract, which expires at the end of next season, and that he is in for the ‘long term’ of Arsenal’s future.

The Arsenal CEO said:

"We have got a fantastic manager. We hope that he wants to do what he is doing for the long term. I believe he does.

Quietly and at the right time I think we will make an announcement on a new deal when things are put in place."

Former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein made one of his periodic appearances on Sky Sports to discuss Arsenal’s summer plans and Arsene Wenger’s will to win.

Dein is still keenly involved with Wenger despite leaving Arsenal in 2007, with the two being close friends.

Fabregas

Dein, who’s son Darren is Cesc Fabregas’s agent, seemed to think it was a possibility for the Spanish midfielder to return to Arsenal this summer. When asked if he thought it was a possibility, he replied:

Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain has admitted a move to the Emirates would suit him.

The Real Madrid forward confirmed after their last game of the La Liga season that the ‘decision was made’ for him to leave the Bernabeu, after 7 years with the club.

Encouraging

Arsenal face a struggle to lure Higuain, with Serie A titans Juventus very interested in his signature. It is believed Real would want around £20-22m for the Argentinian, a fee within the realms of reason for both sides, but Arsenal especially.

A delicious triumvirate of bad news stories, as far as Arsenal are concerned, begins with the news that Cesc Fabregas has reportedly stated on Spanish radio that he will not leave Barcelona this summer.

The former Arsenal captain has been seeking assurances from Tito Vilanova over his future, and appears to have received them. Fabregas is quoted as saying:

‘I’m very happy at Barca, and I want to stay for many more years to come.’

He said much the same when quizzed a couple of months ago, and the source for these quotes, Radio Catalunya, does not have a record of any such interview on its website.
