With Bacary Sagna seemingly set to leave Arsenal, the club have been linked with numerous replacements, from Dani Alves to Micah Richards.

There are differing schools of thought as to what Arsenal need-a long-term replacement for the Frenchman, or a player who can challenge/back up Carl Jenkinson, who’s been much improved this season.

According to the Independent, Spurs have registered a serious interest in signing David Villa, who oh-so-nearly joined Arsenal during January.

The Spanish forward is surplus to requirements at Barcelona, and is apparently dead set on a move to North London.

Bidding war?

Arsenal apparently still hold a mild interest in recruiting Villa as a super-sub type player, but both they and Spurs are unwilling to meet Barcelona’s (rather silly) asking price of £12m.

I think we can safely assume that Arsenal have a Lot of Money right now. Besides the oft-quoted £70m ‘war-chest’, there’s also money from the Puma kit deal and Emirates sponsorship deal to be spent, and the line from Arsenal’s PR machine hasn’t exactly been pleading bankruptcy of late.

So, this leaves Arsene Wenger in the position of not only seemingly being required to spend money in the summer, but being expected to, by everyone from fans to those above him.

You’ll all be aware that Arsenal are chasing Swansea’s Ashley Williams, along with Liverpool, though the Gunners are much further along.

The Welsh captain has impressed (?) this season, leading Swansea to Capital One Cup glory alongside Chico Flores. It’s transpired that Swansea will only listen to offers of £10m for the defender, with prices as high as £12m mooted.

As ever, the ‘British premium’ seems to be applying, in which a British player will cost far more than a foreign player of equal or better ability, simply due to their home-grown nature.

It was all looking a bit bleak at the weekend. Manchester United had massively let Arsenal down by losing to Chelsea, allowing them to overtake Arsenal into third place.

What’s more, Spurs were looking like regaining some form, with Gareth Bale popping up with yet another winning goal.

There was talk that Stevan Jovetic was keen to remain in Italy for another few seasons, with replacements like Loic Remy suggested.

What’s more, Ashley Williams continued to be linked with Arsenal.

But after yesterday, a lot seems to have changed.
