One of the most exciting rumours that have involved Arsenal over the past few seasons has without a doubt been the speculation over the past week surrounding David Villa, Barcelona and the Gunners.

With the North Londoners clearly lacking in fire-power quantity, the reportedly want-away Villa has been the subject of prayers from Gooners up and down the country, simply for the Catalan outfit to #FreeDavidVilla.

The best part about all the talk was that it was actually so believably true. Villa wanted Arsenal, Barca didn’t need Villa, Arsenal were owed by Barca, and Arsenal could afford the projected transfer fee and wages of the player.

However, before Gunners fans needed to worry about pinching themselves, it appears that Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has already delivered an almighty slap round the face by issuing this statement.

So after Arsenal’s season (in the eyes of many) very nearly came to an end on Sunday, midfielder Mikel Arteta has spoken out to remind his teammates that the club are still without a trophy in over seven years.

The Gunners were minutes from bowing out of the FA Cup at the first attempt after Michu had given Swansea City the lead at the Liberty Stadium. But in the end it was the hosts who had to save themselves, as Danny Graham’s late equaliser salvaged the Swans a replay after Lukas Podolski and Kieran Gibbs had put the Gunners 2-1 up.

Arsenal will now have a second chance to get past the Welsh outfit but on home turf when the two teams take to the Emirates on Tuesday January 15, with the winner travelling to Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round.

According to L'Equipe Yann M’vila looks set to leave Rennes in the winter.

During the last few months, M’vila’ attitude and footballing quality has been questioned. He has both been it with injuries and has struggled to break into the French national XI team. Bad behaviour off the pitch has been a factor as well.

But we do know the quality M’vila has. At the age of 22, he has it all going for him. A tall, 6’0 foot, well built holding central midfielder would settle into the Premiership quite nicely. It could be the birth of a new footballing legend.

Sources close to Barcelona indicate that Arsenal's pursuit of David Villa may be futile.

According to popular La Liga journalist Guillem Balague, Barcelona will not accept any bid for David Villa in the January transfer window, but they will allow him to leave in the summer, as they can replace him by moving their deal for Neymar forward a year.

Contact

Arsene Wenger rang Villa recently in an attempt to talk him round, but got the impression that the Spaniard wanted to stay until the end of the season and see what his situation is like then.

The 3rd round of the FA Cup is one of the most exciting days of the season, and this year Arsenal find it as their only real prospect of winning a trophy.

After Arsenal’s four game winning streak in the league came to an end with an awful performance in the draw against Southampton, now is the chance to bounce back.

‘Maximum Effort’

After losing to Bradford in the Capital One Cup, being way behind in the league, and up against tough opposition in Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Arsenal know that realistically it’s this or nothing. So it has been no surprise to see Wenger come out and say that the side will put their ‘maximum effort’ in to secure passage to the next round.
