After a couple of weeks back in full Arsenal training, Jack Wilshere played his first (vaguely) competitive football for 14 months, starting and playing 63 minutes of Arsenal U21’s 1-0 defeat to West Brom at the Hawthorns.

A welcome presence

Lining up alongside fellow long-term absentee Emmanuel Frimpong, Wilshere gave an air of class to proceedings, and his return naturally raised the profile of the match beyond that of a reserve game.

As Arsenal’s mission to stop bleeding key players every year continues, the club are set to offer French right-back Bacary Sagna a new contract in the next two weeks.

Derailed

Earlier in the season Arsenal were planning to offer both Sagna and his full-back partner Kieran Gibbs new contracts, but those plans were put on the backburner when Sagna made some comments to L’Equipe expressing mild dissatisfaction with Arsenal’s transfer policy.

In a recent interview with the press, Arsene Wenger revealed that Arsenal were one of the English teams battling it out over Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard. He was believed to have been out of the Gunner’s reach because of his increased stock, but Arsenal apparently met his £32m release clause, only for Chelsea to beat them on personal terms:

'All the teams with big budgets in England were after him. The transfer price was fixed, because he has a buyout clause, so everybody was at the same level,' said Wenger.

This weeks Premier League game sees an in form Arsenal side play top of the league Chelsea.  Arsenal come into the game on the back of an impressive 1-1 draw away to champions Manchester City and a comfortable 6-1 victory over League 1’s Coventry City in the Capital One Cup.  Chelsea unconvincingly beat Stoke last weekend 1-0 but remain top of the league after five games.

Strong starters

This season has seen both teams make impressive starts to the season.  Two unbeaten starts in all competitions have convinced many people that both teams have the potential to rival the big Manchester clubs for the title this season.

Arsenal recorded a profit of 37m, making the current stockpile of money around 190m. This has naturally dredged up the old arguments regarding whether Arsene Wenger has full access to the money he could use, and whether the board support him in his transfer dealings.

As ever, Ivan Gazidis was only too keen to speak in Arsene’s defence.

Forging their own path

Arsenal CEO Gazidis has today insisted that Arsenal are focused on ‘forging our own path to success”.
