Arsenal travel to the Etihad this Sunday level on points with the reigning champions. They travel with the aim to prove that they are genuine title contenders who can win the big matches such as this.

Arsenal have had a strong start, going unbeaten and only conceding one goal, which frankly was a goalkeeping error that shouldn’t have happened. Arsenal sit in third place with City sitting one behind in fourth.

Although Manchester City are level with Arsenal, they haven’t had such a good start by their standards. Draws with Stoke and Liverpool have put them under pressure for a win on Sunday.

It’s been a difficult year for Jack Wilshere. He’s had to cope with a new-born son, allegations of drug abuse (false), and being injured. But things just got a little easier for him, as the 20-year old midfielder returned to full training with Arsenal today, along with Emmanuel Frimpong.(Link to gallery)

What happened?

The injury nightmare began for Wilshere when he suffered an ankle problem on international duty. He seemed to recover, but it was then aggravated by a dodgy tackle (surprise surprise) during an Emirates Cup game against New York Red Bulls.

An interview with Tony Adams has appeared in the wake of Arsenal’s victory over Montpelier last night, in which he brings out the usual ex-player adages about being “concerned” about Arsenal “becoming a selling club”, and also says that Arsenal will not win the Champions League “with their current mentality.

It was a rather strange interview for a number of reasons.

Out of date

The former Arsenal defender also produced the usual criticism of Arsenal’s defending and general set up of the team while off the ball. While this would have made sense last year, it’s clear things are a bit different right now. Especially noticeable was his comment that Arsenal do not “defend as a team” while Chelsea do, and “that’s why they won the Champions League”. Again, it seems quite obvious now that Arsenal do defend as a team.

SouthamptonThe season so far has seen these two teams make very different starts.  Arsenal have pulled out our best defensive start to a season since 1924 with regards to goals conceded…0!

Southampton on the other hand have lost all three of their games so far.

Despite how it looks on the surface, it would be unwise to suggest the game will be an easy win.

New boys keep us guessing

Arsenal haven’t played Southampton since 2005, the year Southampton were relegated from the top division.

Although both games that season between the two teams ended in a draw, the fact it was so long ago makes this almost irrelevant.

The news has broken very recently that Abou Diaby is set to miss France’s next game due to injury. This has naturally created a lot of worry, as Diaby’s injury problems are well documented and Arsenal can’t really do with him having a long period out, nor can he.
