Arsenal and Arsene Wenger made history last night by becoming the first English club to beat Borussia Dortmund in an away Champions League fixture. This is not the first time these types of achievements have happened with victories at the Bernabeu, San Siro and most recently, the Allianz Arena.

Prior to the game there was a lot of talk about each sides differing styles of play. Klopp likes his players to pursue a ferocious and tireless pressing game whereas Wenger encourages a patient and possession based strategy.

Thanks to the wonderfully rejuvenated Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal left Germany as unlikely victors. Arsenal has always been praised for their beautiful, attacking football, but has had many critics for their defensive frailties. However, last night was a turning point.

It was always going to be an interesting game as these two sides met at the Westfalenstadion, with both teams in fine form domestically.

This was the second part of the biggest test of three Arsenal will have faced so far this season, having already overcome Liverpool, now seeing off Dortmund, with an exciting encounter with Manchester United coming up on the weekend.

After an exciting end-to-end all action match, who else but the on form Aaron Ramsey to nod in what was to be the decisive goal in the 62nd minute.

Wojciech Szczesny – 7 – A mixed bag of performances this season, may have had some Arsenal fans nervous about how our keeper would fair tonight against his fellow Pole Robert Lewandowski and Dortmund tonight.

This feels like the start of an acid test for Arsenal. Three games against strong opposition started with Liverpool. And after two successive defeats, Arsenal's temperament, as well as their quality, would be under pressure. After a deserved 2-0 win over Liverpool, the Gunners can consider their first test well and truly passed.

Wojciech Szczesny - 7 – A solid display was nearly sullied by a horror moment,  when he nearly gifted Daniel Sturridge a goal. But the Pole's luck was in, and he made a couple of decent saves in the second-half.

Bacary Sagna – 8 – The Frenchman's excellent season continues. He had Aly Cissokho in his pocket in the first-half, and covered Per Mertesacker effectively when needed. His run and cross for Santi Cazorla's goal should not be overlooked.

Tonight’s game was billed as a huge clash by virtually everyone in the footballing world.  The two “in-form” teams in the league fighting it out to assert dominance a top the Premier League table.  It was Arsenal who eventually coasted to victory, but what should we take from the game?

The Liverpool Myth

To my mind, tonight summed up something I have been saying all season about the current Liverpool team.  It simply isn’t that good.  Aside from Suarez, Gerrard (and arguably Sturridge who I admit is in good form), their team strikes me as fairly average.

Liverpool’s top 4 aspirations have been massively overblown this season and I think they will seriously struggle to clinch Champions League football at the end of the season.

Despite fielding a reasonably strong team this evening, Arsene Wenger’s team were outclassed by a second string Chelsea team that still looked very impressive.

Lukasz Fabianski – 6 – In fairness to Fabianski, there wasn’t much he could have done about either of the two Chelsea goals.  Other than those his evening was fairly quiet and he dealt with everything else reasonably well.

Nacho Monreal – 6 – Nacho made some promising runs at numerous points throughout the game and even had one of our better shots on goal.  He evidently wanted to prove a point to Wenger in an attempt to stay in the first team plans.

Laurent Koscielny – 6 – Strode out of defence confidently several times in the match to cut out the Chelsea play.  However, gave the ball away far too often and made too many errors.
