Arsenal deservedly beat arguably Europe’s best team at home tonight. On a night when salvaged pride was the mission, the players walked off the pitch at the Allianz Arena with their heads held high and the cheers of the small band of steadfastly raucous travelling fans deservedly ringing in their ears.

This result should give Arsenal belief. The defence that has looked so poor was superb against the team dominating the Bundesliga and the lift this result creates can fire us on our way to Champions League qualification. But amidst the numerous positives lurks the nagging doubt of ‘what if?’

Arsenal player ratings

A painful defeat, but not a surprising result. Tottenham have been knocking on the door to surpass Arsenal for a few seasons now. With this 2-1 win in the North London derby, they may have just managed it.

Wojciech Szczesny - 5 – His kicking remains an issue, but otherwise this was a better performance from Szczesny. Could do little with either of the Tottenham goals, with the accountability for them being on the men stationed in front of him.

Carl Jenkinson - 6 – Jenkinson's performance should be caveated by the fact that he received little support from Theo Walcott on the right flank. Having to do the work of two men, Jenkinson tried gamely, also putting in some decent crosses. Was substituted when Arsenal pushed for an equaliser.

Champagne flows like water. Grown men weep tears of unbridled joy. A million children are conceived in a single evening. Parties erupt on every street, in every home. DVDs are hastily pressed and lovingly distributed to anyone who passes by.

For Spurs have defeated Arsenal in a game of football. And judging by the reaction in White Hart Lane, they’ve also won the Premier League in early March. Quite incredible really. I’ve never heard of a team that’s done that anywhere.

This was a game where the result mattered, not the performance. And it's just as well, because this was a stuttering Arsenal display. However, it brought 3 points, so Gooners everywhere will breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Wojciech Szczesny - 5 – The Pole is in a bad run of form at present. He made a poor effort to stop the shot from Andreas Weimann that led to the equaliser. Can count himself lucky that it didn't cost Arsenal two points.

Carl Jenkinson - 6 – He did a decent job of trying to shackle the pacey Gabriel Agbonlahor. Struggled when trying to augment the right flank going forward, but improved in the second-half. However, his positioning still needs a bit of work.

Bayern Munich are one of the best teams in Europe.  I say this early on because it is vital that we remember this in the coming days.  They are better than us and they beat us, I challenge anyone to dispute this claim.

Nevertheless upsets do happen, as we saw last weekend football matches aren’t won on paper.  We had a chance this evening, as we do in every game.  We are Arsenal Football Club, a club capable of beating the very best on our day.  Unfortunately, today was not our day.
