Arsenal travel to The Hawthorns this weekend in what will be another tough away test for the Gunners, as they look to extend their record to eight away victories in a row in the League.

After another exceptional week for the Arsenal, confidence will be oozing from every crevice that surrounds the Emirates. The mid-week win against Napoli and the style in which it was played, re-affirms the growing mumblings around Arsenal that they could be in line for silver-ware this year.

Wenger has placed a high level of importance on this game in the quest to keep the run going:

“it is a massive game for us, important to maintain our consistent run, we can do better, there is more to come, it depends how hungry we are.”

Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher says that while the glamorous attacking Arsenal football may be what gets the headlines, it is the players on defensive duty who are the unsung heroes.

Since the opening day defeat at home to Aston Villa, in which Arsenal conceded 3 goals of comical calibre, the Gunners defence has shored up and now boast the second best goal difference in the League.

Carragher says this is down to the work of the back four, predominantly Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Kieran Gibbs and either Bacary Sagna or Carl Jenkinson.

He also called for patience over current number 1 and Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny:

Bad news ahead of Sunday’s Premier League tie with West Bromwich Albion. Bacary Sagna’s scan yesterday revealed a hamstring injury that will leave him out of action for at least two weeks.

Sagna has been one of the team’s most consistent performers over the past three or four seasons, and has been in fine form so far during this campaign, and his absence will be felt. The French international sustained the injury in Tuesday night’s game against Napoli.

The international break softens the blow to some extent. After Sunday, the Gunners’ next match is at home to Norwich City on 19 October before a home Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund three days later.

Premier League leaders Arsenal travel to the Hawthorns to face mid-table West Bromwich Albion for Sunday’s 4pm kick-off.

Arsène Wenger spoke to Arsenal Player today to provide an update on the injury front following Tuesday night’s Champions League tie against Napoli.

Wenger said:

“The only uncertainty we have could be Bacary Sagna who had a little hamstring problem. He has a scan today [Thursday] and from then on we will assess his situation. Everybody else came out of the Napoli game without a major problem so they should all be available.”

Arsenal’s recent fine form seems likely to earn Arsène Wenger both a new contract and a pay rise according to today’s newspapers.

The Daily Mirror claims Wenger will be offered a three-year deal worth £8 million a year – £500,000 a year more than his current contract, which expires at the end of the summer.

Wenger has just celebrated the 17th anniversary of his appointment as Gunners boss, making him the longest serving manager in English football, and is 63 years old.

The reported new deal would see him rule over the Emirates for more than two decades and easily see Wenger chalk up 1,000 games as Arsenal manager. He is already by some distance the longest-serving manager in the club’s history and its only manager from outside the UK.
